The wave plate may be rotated independently of the prism. It has it�s own locking collar. Attenuation adjustment range has a ratio of approximately 100 to 1, with a less than 15% insertion loss.

Optics are in perfect condition as is the main rotating mount assembly. However the countershaft with the sprocket has been slightly bent and there are some teeth missing on the belt. The stainless steel lever for adjusting the initial orientation of the polarizing prism is missing. Axle and belt could be replaced very easily (axle is held in place with two �E� clips). Handle for polarizer simply threads in place and threads are not damaged. The drive mechanism has the advantage of allowing attenuation adjustment without having to open the laser enclosure. The external actuator knob and system connecting the carrier to the external actuator are not present.

We suspect Wollaston may be the manufacturer.

This is a holder with a calcite prism installed. It splits an incident laser beam (shown in the photos with a small HeNe laser) into two beams perpendicularly polarized to each other. One beam appears to be much more divergent than the other, but this was not tested on an optical bench so no measurements were made. However, the beam that is �single� seems to process about the beam with the ghost images. I am not sure if the prism is a single oriented crystal of Calcite, or if it is actually a type of Wollaston prism. As can be seen in the third photo, the beam is split into two primary beams, one of which has the ghost reflections. I took additional photos with a polarizer alternately blocking the primary beam, and after a 90-degree rotation, the secondary (extraordinary) beam.

The cell mounting for the prism is 1 inch in diameter, not including the cap. The larger aperture on the smaller diameter side is about 5mm, that of the �cap� only about 3mm. There are two scribe marks on the cap which I would have thought indicated the permitted vibration directions of each beam, but they appear to be turned relative to the plane of polarization (perhaps the holder for the cell has the matching indications similarly offset).

The holders and prisms appear to be in perfect condition. The prism has some sort of anti-reflective coating but I am not sure what it is, or if it is optimized for a particular wavelength region. The prism appears to be approximately 7 or 8 mm square, but I was unable to measure this since access to the prism is precluded by the cap.
